Overview

Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) is the progressive wearing down of joint cartilage, leading to bone-on-bone pain and inflammation. It affects older pets or those with injuries/dysplasia.

Transmission

Degenerative. Not contagious.

Progression & Stages

Stiffness after rest ("gelling"), limping, muscle loss, reluctance to jump.

Diagnosis

Physical exam (crepitus/crunching) and X-rays.

Treatment Protocols

Multimodal: Weight loss, NSAIDs (Carprofen/Galliprant), Joint supplements (Omega-3), Physical Therapy, Adequan injections.

Prevention

Maintain lean body weight throughout life.

Prognosis

Manageable. Chronic and progressive.
