IVDD is a spinal condition where the cushioning discs between vertebrae either bulge or burst (herniate), compressing the spinal cord. It causes pain, weakness, or paralysis. Dachshunds are genetically predisposed.
This condition requires veterinary attention.
If your animal shows the Key or Common signs listed, please visit a clinic immediately.
Report Case / Get HelpGenetic/Degenerative. Not contagious.
Grade 1: Pain only. Grade 5: Complete paralysis with no deep pain sensation (medical emergency).
MRI is the gold standard to locate the compression. X-rays can show narrowed spaces but not the cord itself.
Mild: Strict cage rest and anti-inflammatories for 4-6 weeks. Severe (Paralysis): Emergency decompressive surgery (Hemilaminectomy).
Keeping at-risk dogs lean and using ramps instead of stairs.
Good for pain/mild weakness. Prognosis drops significantly if deep pain sensation is lost for >24 hours.
