Tracheal Collapse

Overview

A progressive weakening of the cartilage rings of the windpipe (trachea), causing it to flatten during breathing. Common in Yorkies and Poms. Causes a "goose honk" cough.

Transmission

Genetic/Degenerative.

Progression & Stages

Mild cough with excitement. Progression to constant distress and fainting (syncope).

Diagnosis

X-rays (inspiratory/expiratory views). Fluoroscopy.

Treatment Protocols

Cough suppressants, sedatives, weight loss. Stents for end-stage cases.

Prevention

Use harness instead of collar. Maintain healthy weight.

Prognosis

Managed for life. Progressive.
