Breast cancer is the most common tumor in unspayed female dogs. 50% are malignant. In cats, 85% are malignant and highly aggressive.

Hard lumps in mammary chain. Metastasis to lungs is the main cause of death.
Biopsy. Chest X-rays to check for spread before surgery.
Surgical removal (Mastectomy). Spaying at time of surgery.
Spaying before the first heat cycle reduces risk to <0.5%. Spaying after 2nd heat offers little protection.
Dogs: 50/50 benign/malignant. Cats: Poor (median survival <1 year).
