Gastroenteritis is a general term for inflammation of the stomach and intestines, resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. "Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis" (HGE/AHDS) is a specific, severe form in dogs causing raspberry-jam-like bloody stool and rapid dehydration.
This condition requires veterinary attention.
If your animal shows the Key or Common signs listed, please visit a clinic immediately.
Report Case / Get HelpNot contagious unless the underlying cause is infectious (Parvo, Parasites). Dietary indiscretion is a non-contagious cause.
Standard GE is self-limiting. Hemorrhagic GE (AHDS) progresses rapidly to hypovolemic shock due to massive fluid shift into the gut, even without severe external fluid loss.
Diagnosis involves blood work (looking for high PCV/Hemoconcentration in HGE), fecal exams, and imaging to rule out obstruction.
Rehydration is the priority. IV fluids are mandatory for HGE. Anti-nausea meds, probiotics, and a bland diet support recovery.
Avoid sudden diet changes and scavenging. There is no specific prevention for idiopathic HGE.
Excellent with aggressive fluid therapy. HGE can be fatal if untreated due to shock.
