Medical Details

Transmission

Not contagious unless the underlying cause is infectious (Parvo, Parasites). Dietary indiscretion is a non-contagious cause.

Progression & Stages

Standard GE is self-limiting. Hemorrhagic GE (AHDS) progresses rapidly to hypovolemic shock due to massive fluid shift into the gut, even without severe external fluid loss.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves blood work (looking for high PCV/Hemoconcentration in HGE), fecal exams, and imaging to rule out obstruction.

Treatment Protocols

Rehydration is the priority. IV fluids are mandatory for HGE. Anti-nausea meds, probiotics, and a bland diet support recovery.

Prevention

Avoid sudden diet changes and scavenging. There is no specific prevention for idiopathic HGE.

Prognosis

Excellent with aggressive fluid therapy. HGE can be fatal if untreated due to shock.
