Paraphimosis

Overview

A urologic emergency where the dog's penis becomes extruded and trapped outside the prepuce (sheath) and cannot retract. The constriction cuts off blood flow, leading to swelling and necrosis.

Medical Details

Transmission

Anatomical/Traumatic. Not contagious.

Progression & Stages

Swollen, dry, purple/black glans penis. Pain.

Diagnosis

Physical exam.

Treatment Protocols

Lubrication, hypertonic sugar solutions (to draw out fluid/shrink swelling), and manual reduction. Surgery if recurrent.

Prevention

Trimming preputial hair may help if it causes tangles.

Prognosis

Good if treated immediately. Tissue death requires amputation.
