Overview

Chronic Hepatitis is long-term liver inflammation leading to scarring (cirrhosis) and loss of function. Unlike "Infectious Hepatitis," this form is typically immune-mediated, toxins-induced, or genetic (Copper Storage Disease in Bedlington Terriers/Labradors).

  • Clay-colored stool
  • SeizuresEmergency
  • Abdominal distensionEmergency
  • Jaundice
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Behavior change
  • Weight loss

Medical Details

Transmission

This form of hepatitis is not contagious. It is often genetic or autoimmune.

Progression & Stages

Slow progression from asymptomatic inflammation to fibrosis (scarring) and finally liver failure with fluid in abdomen (ascites) and brain toxins (encephalopathy).

Diagnosis

Biopsy is the only definitive test. Blood work shows persistent high liver enzymes (ALT/ALP). Ultrasound shows liver texture changes.

Treatment Protocols

Depends on cause. Immune-mediated: Steroids/Cyclosporine. Copper storage: Penicillamine (chelator) and low-copper diet. Antioxidants (SAMe) support liver health.

Prevention

Genetic screening for breeds at risk of Copper Storage Disease. Avoid known liver toxins.

Prognosis

Variable. With lifelong management, survival can be years. Late-stage failure has a poor prognosis.
