Hypothyroidism

Overview

Hypothyroidism is a common hormone deficiency in dogs where the thyroid gland is destroyed (immune-mediated thyroiditis) and underproduces metabolism-regulating hormones.

Medical Details

Transmission

Autoimmune/Genetic. Not contagious.

Progression & Stages

Slow onset. Signs include weight gain without overeating, lethargy, cold intolerance, and skin issues ("Rat tail", hair loss, dark skin).

Diagnosis

Blood panel showing low T4 and high TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone).

Treatment Protocols

Daily oral synthetic thyroid hormone (Levothyroxine). It is inexpensive and effective.

Prevention

None. Genetic predisposition in Goldens, Dobermans.

Prognosis

Excellent. Once regulated, the dog returns to normal health.
