Overview

Toxocara is the most common intestinal parasite in dogs/cats. Almost all puppies are born with them. They look like spaghetti in stool and cause a pot-bellied appearance.

  • Pot belly
  • Worms in stool
  • Diarrhea

  • Increased appetite
  • Coughing
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting

Rare or Advanced Signs

  • Poor coat

Medical Details

Transmission

Mother to pup (transplacental/milk). Ingestion of eggs.

Progression & Stages

Larvae migrate through liver/lungs (causing coughing) before settling in gut.

Diagnosis

Fecal flotation.

Treatment Protocols

Dewormers (Pyrantel). Repeat doses needed to kill migrating larvae.

Prevention

Deworm puppies at 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks.

Prognosis

Excellent.
